Mexico overcome Dominican Republic, 9-7 in Federation of International Polo Qualifiers: Polo Recap
The Mexican polo team emerged victorious over the Dominican Republic by a commanding two goals, 9-7 in the first of the two-match series of the Federation of International Polo (FIP) Zone II. The crucial game was held at Casa de Campo, city of Dominican
Republic.
At the start of the game, the two teams were on a high verge to establish their dominance. However, it was Dominican Republic which succeeded to draw the first blood. They were awarded three goals in the head of less-handicaps. Meanwhile, Dennis Santana
added another goal from the field to expand their lead up to four goals, 4-0.
From the other side, the Mexican strikers were not sitting idle and letting the game go by. Valerio Aguilar and Alejandro Gonzalez scored one goal each to bring their team within the score-net. The first half of play concluded with Dominican Republic sitting
on top by two goals, 4-2.
The second round completely belonged to Mexico, which earned a pair of goals while holding Dominican Republic goal-less. Francisco Aguilar and his team-mate Valerio Aguilar chipped in one goal each to make the game more interesting. The two teams locked
horns at four-all deadlock at the end of the second chukka.
Amazingly, the two teams showed brilliant defence in the third period and failed to make an addition on the score-board. At the half-time, the two teams were enjoying four-all deadlock with them.
The pace of the game slowed down in the second half of play, as both, Mexico and the Dominican Republic started defensive game. However, a Mexican player, Alejandro Gomez de Parada, succeeded to break the defence-line of Dominican Republic and scored a go-ahead
goal. The Mexican squad established their dominance for the first time in the game. The visitors were sitting on top by a single-goal edge, 5-4, with two chukkas left to play.
In the second last round, Mexico further expanded their lead by scoring three more goals, while holding Dominican Republic score-less in the seven and half minutes of play. The Mexican trio, Alejandro Gonzalez, Valerio Aguilar and Francisco Aguilar, scored
one goal each in the period to take an insurmountable four-goal advantage, 8-4.
The Dominican Republic attack came alive in the final set of play and scored three goals while limiting opponents only for a single goal. Guillermo Cochon, Dennis Santana and Enhelberto Maldonado accounted for one goal, but failed to reduce the widely spread
difference. Valerio Aguilar notched another goal to close out the final period and seal the victory for Mexico at 9-7.
