Mexico retains NORCECA Maeva Beach Volleyball trophy
The 2010 NORCECA Maeva Beach Volleyball Tournament kicked off on 30th September 2010 at Manzanillo, Mexico and concluded on Sunday. The event greeted 10 women while 11 men pairs from several South and North American countries including Cuba, Guatemala,
Mexico, Puerto Rico and Canada.
In men’s section, some amazing fights were seen as the players struggled hard to gain better status. Some of the teams got eliminated in the first two days while rest appeared in the final four matches.
Semi-finals:
The event's semi-finals were held on Saturday. In the first semi-final, Canada stroke with Puerto Rico. The match created a lot of buzz and in the end; Canadian supporters celebrated their team's victory. Canada's pair of Josh Binstock and Andrew Hinchey
demonstrated some incredible efforts and clinched a spot in the gold medal match. They defeated Puerto Rico’s Roberto Rodriguez and Orlando Irizarry by 2-1 (20-22, 21-19, and 15-13).
The Puerto Rican side opened the match with some good shots and dominated the Canadians. They successfully captured the first set but situation totally changed in the following two sets as Canada bounced back and took control of the game. They kicked Puerto
Ricans out by winning the last two sets.
Similarly, the defending champions from host-country, Aldo Miramontes and Juan Virgen also paved their way to the final by defeating Cuba's Yeondry Kindelan and Sergio González in the second semi-final. The Mexican pair proved their endeavour in the game
and smashed Cuba 22-20 and 21-19. Although, the Cubans put a good score but still lost the match.
Gold medal match:
The winners of both semi-finals met in the final match on Sunday. Aldo Miaramontes and Juan Virgen of Mexico played against Josh Binstock and Andrew Hinchey of Canada. The home team looked in good form and they also had the support of the home crowd.
The event's champion was ultimately defined in two sets. The Mexican hotshots, Aldo/Virgen once again confirmed their power and secured the title for yet another year. They started the first set with back-row attack and earned an early lead while on the
other hand, Canadian pair struggled to gain confidence. The defending champion, Mexico didn’t give them a chance to rest their gaze on the trophy. In the end, Aldo/Virgen claimed the first set with 21-13.
The second set also appeared to have the same theme as Aldo/Virgen delivered some outstanding shots and put pressure on the guest pair. They helped their score with tricky bump-passes and quick under-hand shots. The Mexicans maintained a fair gap of points
and took their score to 21-15, winning the second set also. They clinched gold-ware in the end.
Bronze medal match:
The failing teams of semi-finals competed for the third place. Earlier, Puerto Rico was defeated by Canada while Cuba had suffered the same damage from Mexico in the two semi-finals. Nonetheless, both these teams had another chance to show their talent.
The bronze medal victory graced Cuban pair as they built a score of 21-13 and 21-14 against Puerto Rico. Cuba settled for bronze medal and pushed Puerto Rico out of the game.
