Mexico turns out to be a surprise package for many, John Huh steals the show – Mayakoba Golf Classic
Mayakoba Golf Classic event ended in the most unexpected manner as John Huh won his first PGA Tour title, defeating his Australian opponent Robert Allenby on Sunday.
The rookie was able to get off the mark with the help of an extra eighth hole that turned out to be the turning point of the game.
21-year-old Huh, commenting on the victory, said, "It's amazing, I can't believe it happened right now".
He continued, "It was my dream to play on the PGA Tour and now, finally winning a tournament. It's awesome".
Both players were able to finish the regulation with 72 holes at a score line of 13-under 271. However, Huh turned the game with the help of his flawless eight-under 63.
Allenby, on the other hand, made a bogey at 65 that cost him the championship. It is also important to mention here that the playoff between these two players can also be accredited as being the second longest in the history of the PGA Tour.
It was back in 1949, at the Motor City Open, between Cary Middlecoff and Lloyd Mangrum when a golf match comprised 11 playoffs.
During the match, there came a phase when Allenby was able to stabilise his position in the game with the help of eight birdies in the final round.
He was able to list himself among the top contenders of the championship with Will Claxton, Daniel Summerhays and Greg Owens. However, the results turned out to be completely opposite.
Appreciating the champion, Allenby said, "John's a great player. I played with him yesterday, and he's got a great future. He's a young guy, and all the best to him. It's great to see him win".
Apart from this, the Aussie continuously appreciated his opponent on every shot he played.
He further added that Huh does have the spark and potential that can help him make his place among the top-tier of golf in no time.
Other than these two American golfers, Matt Every and Colt Knost, with their 66 on the scoreboard coupled with 11 under, were able to tie for the third position in the event.
