Mexico’s Yanquis dominate to take 2011 Caribbean Series title – MLB News
Mexico’s Yanquis put in a tremendous performance as they dominated Venezuela at the Isidoro stadium to take the 2011 Caribbean Series title.
Puerto Rico, Mexico, Venezuela and the Dominican Republic participated in the 2011 Caribbean Series.
The President of Puerto Rico professional Baseball League Sadi Antonmattei considered the Series a success story.
"There have not been many series this close and not every series has the opportunity to have a four-way tie on the last day," said Sadi Antonmattei, president of the Puerto Rico Professional Baseball League. "In terms of competitiveness, it's been a very
close series and it was up to par."
This is the second time that the Yaquis are representing Mexico in the Caribbean Series. Not since 1981 has the team won the Series.
Overall Mexico has won the title six times. This year the team managed to dominate the others and put in some tremendous performances on the field to stamp their authority in the Series. The Caribbean Series is the perfect showcase to highlight the players
and teams from Latin America. Many players from this part of the World participate in Major League Baseball. Some of these players also take part in the Caribbean Series.
Although the turn-out for the Series was decent, it could have much better.
"We wanted to see more fans here but we know that Monday is a tough day," Antonmattei said. "We expected a bit more, but it's been great all series. It's been an example that not everything has to be in the metro of San Juan."
The Dominican Republic leads with 18 Championships with Puerto Rico on 14 wins as Cuba and Venezuela have seven wins followed by this year’s Champions Mexico with six victories.
The Caribbean Series has done a brilliant job at promoting baseball throughout the Latin America countries. Many players also get the opportunity to show off their skills in the front of the fans. As baseball is beginning to gain popularity in this part
of the World, tournaments like the Caribbean Series are becoming more successful.
