Question:

Mezzo-Soprano/Belt Audition Piece (Not from a known musical)?

I go to an arts school for music theatre and at the beginning of every year we have to sing a song for an audition. I'm trying to get a head start by picking a song but i can't seem to find one that hasn't already been done. I want to sing a song that is relativly unknown, not from rent, wicked etc..

Any suggestions?

  1. I would strongly recommend "Someone Else's Story" from Chess.  It is a lesser-known musical and the song is absolutely perfect for a Mezzo/Belter!  It will really show off those velvet-y low notes!  The text is also really powerful, so it will help you show off your acting ability!  Good luck with your audition!

    P.S. To practice, the accompaniment to the song is available on Youtube... search "Someone Else's Story Chess Karaoke," it really helps!

  2. I went to our local website for Contest Solo Voice pieces, State of WI, Music Festival.

    This is the list for Mezzo-Soprano.

    Mezzo-Soprano Songs:

    Der FrŸhling (Brahms)

    Du bist die Ruh (Schubert) [E]

    {also 401A18}

    I attempt from love's sickness to fly (Purcell) {also 401A17}

    Kennst du das Land (Beethoven )

    Now the dancing sunbeams play/Mermaid's Song (Haydn)

    - also in Haydn Canzonettas and Songs-Peters

    Composer: ed. Northcote

    Publisher: BH /Peters
