  1. Yes, mice can climb carpeted stairs easily.  They can climb vertical pipes, wires and siding.

To cure the problem, set a dozen traps in the basement. Use three different lures on the traps. Chocolate, peanut butter and beef jerky. Once you go two weeks without catching any more, block off all entrances where they can get in.  Use hardware cloth, roof flashing and steel wool. It may be a huge task but it's the only cure.

If you use poison, you may have a mouse die in the wall of your dining room or kitchen. Then you can either deal with the smell of rotting mouse or cut a hole in the wall to get it out.

Better to trap them and seal the entrances to cure the problem.

If you don't want to tackle it yourself, get some bids from your local pest control companies.

  2. Not only can they climb anything, they can squeeze through almost any hole.  I can pretty much guarantee the mice are going upstairs at night.

  3. Mice can climb anything.  Sorry.

  4. what you need to do is get rat poison, make sure pets can't get to it.

  5. Mice can climb carpeted stairs. Don't worry, the traps will take care of the mice.
