Miami Dolphins’ QB Ryan Tannehill gets Jonathan Martin cover at OT Jake Long place - NFL News
The Miami Dolphins have moved rookie offensive tackle (OT) Jonathan Martin from right tackle position to take place of injured OT Jake Long in an attempt to maintain a higher level of protection around quarterback Ryan Tannehill, who is not much pleased
over the news that Jake's availability in the season opener has become very difficult, if not impossible.
Jake, who has spent most part of the offseason on the injured reserve (IR) list because of a torn right biceps, has suffered a knee injury. The player left the team practice on Monday with an injury scare to the right knee, which MRI scans thankfully showed
not to be a serious one.
Rookie QB Ryan who is likely to lead the team’s offence in the regular season opener on September 09 appears to be less comfortable over the development.
He said:
"It's a tough situation any time one of your teammates goes down. Hopefully it's not too bad and we can get him back soon."
At present Ryan is not a definite starter in the season opener given the team is still to hear about a possible return of veteran QB David Garrard who had led the Dolphins’ depth chart before undergoing a microscopic surgery to fix his knee problem earlier
this month.
The situation does not look an ideal for Ryan if he is given the leading role in the starting game. As he hopes that Jake returns to action soon, a timely development on this end will prove a great help for the rookie.
Dolphins in the meantime have opted for Martin as a makeshift arrangement at Jake’s place, which hopefully works for both – the team and Ryan.
Martin himself said of the move:
"I'm pretty comfortable on that side. Wherever they need me, I'm ready to go. I know the offence pretty well. I just had to flip things around in my head a little bit. I played that position for eight years in high school and college, so I'm pretty good
at it."
As reflective in the comments, the player has boasted his potential to be equally effective at both positions but a real test of his abilities or adaptability is yet to begin.
