Miami Dolphins aim for re-signing core players on long-term deals-NFL News
The Miami Dolphins are reported to have launched the process of negotiating extensions into deals of three, what their owner, Stephen Ross calls,
core players.
Ross, in one his recent remarks claimed that the management was weighing their options on signing new deals with those core players whose deals
are in their final year of the previously stipulated time period.
With that process launched now, the team is aiming to retain
linebacker, Cameron Wake, offensive tackle, Jake Long, and wide receiver, Brian Hartline, on new terms.
However, the task is said to be not that easy as the management might have anticipated.
For example, the linebacker, Cameron Wake, is reported to have been demanding the most expensive contract of the league and the
management might find it very difficult to agree to his terms.
Cleveland Browns’ linebacker, Joe Thomas, with a seven-year deal worth $84 million is the highest paid linebacker in the league,
and it remains as a matter of choice for Dolphins to pay more than the hefty $84 million to Wake or let him go.
If any of these players deserts the team to go unrestricted free agent and from there sign with any other team around the league, it will certainly
add to the difficulties Dolphins are facing due to the lack of depth at certain positions.
Ross said:
"Certainly, those players that we know that are coming up we all know we want to retain them. We have to make sure we're in a
position to do that."
He refrained from giving exact numbers they might be thinking of for each of the veterans and what will be an alternative strategy
for them if they are unable to agree to the terms of these players.
However, the owner and general manager of the team have played down the criticism from fans and some of commentators over lacking
the strategy to rebuild the team as a healthy outfit.
Dolphins’ managers who had been very keen on signing of former Indianapolis Colts’ quarterback, Peyton Manning, off the free
agency, have gone into further difficulties over failing to woo the player to Miami.
Amid the ever-increasing amount of criticism the management is trying best to find solution to their vows but overall are not
that successful so far.
It is probably the last opportunity for them to make these veterans remain committed to the side in the longer run. Any failing
in this will certainly make even harder for Dolphins to come out the phase of uncertainty and find a sense of direction.
Nothing much has come out from the players end about the prospective extensions into their respective deals, except for the linebacker’s
aims of seeking the most expensive contract.
