Miami Dolphins coach Joe Philbin enforces up-tempo workout regimen -NFL News
Running back, Reggie Bush, on the first chance to have a closer look at the workout approach of Dolphins’ new head coach, Joe Philbin, found himself in disbelief over its pace.
First thing he did in reaction to the workout’s up-tempo was to ask running back coach, Jeff Nixon, if they were going to play at the same tempo in the real game.
Bush apparently believes that asking the players to play at such a speed is tantamount, asking for too much from them.
He said:
“That’s a lot of plays. I was just asking our running back coach (Jeff Nixon), ‘Is this going to be the temp in the game?’ "
Bush added:
"We’re pretty fast right now, but usually we practice faster than we should play. I don’t know, we’ll see. Hopefully the tempo will go down a little bit and save some guys because that’s a lot of plays in one game.”
Philbin has replaced Dolphins’ former head coach, Tony Sparano. He has been supervising organised team activities (OTAs), the first ever activity since his joining.
His approach is quite different from his predecessor, and the workout of the team has picked up speed and momentum under him.
Bush noted the change:
“No huddle. Very up-tempo and fast-paced offense. That’s the biggest thing right off the bat."
He added:
"That means our conditioning is going to have to be high, and we’re going to run a lot of plays in real games.”
It is yet to be seen if the new official’s approach is going to work out in the real-game conditions for Dolphins, who are struggling to prove their critics and fans wrong in their criticism on the team’s performance.
Contrary to Bush’s reservations, the new coach’s approach may benefit players like rookie quarterback, Ryan Tannehill.
The rookie does not have much experience, coming out of the college league, and can benefit from the opportunity to work and groom under the new coach.
Matt Moore and David Garrard, Dolphins’ other two QBs, stand equal chance of benefiting from the coach’s training techniques.
