Miami Dolphins considering Mike McCoy as new head coach – NFL News Update
The offensive coordinator of the Denver Broncos, Mike McCoy, has become the latest candidate to be interviewed for the head coaching position with the Miami Dolphins, this Monday, January 16, 2012.
The Dolphins have been without a permanent head coach ever since Tony Sparano was fired.
Under Sparano, the Dolphins lost seven straight games but rebounded to win the next four games. However, with the defeat against the Philadelphia Eagles, Sparano lost favour with the organisation and was sacked.
Sparano had not been a very bad choice after all, as he had helped the Dolphins clinch the AFC East title in 2008, but the team wanted a change to win.
His tenure with the Dolphins spanned three years during which he had a track record of 29-32.
It had not been the first time that the Dolphins failed to reach the playoffs. It was the ninth time in a decade that they missed reaching the postseason, but Dolphins’ owner, Stephen Ross, was determined to bring in a change to the team so he had Sparano
replaced with interim coach, Todd Bowles, for the remaining three games.
McCoy became the latest potential candidate after Jeff Fisher, who had earlier been interviewed and was regarded as a strong contender for the head coach position, chose to become the coach of St. Louis Rams instead, on Friday.
Fisher’s decision came as a surprise for the Dolphins who had been waiting for several days for an answer from him, now being forced to initiate a new search.
Ross said the team would be interviewing other candidates now.
The Dolphins have already interviewed a few candidates in this regard. These include Green Bay Packers' offensive coordinators, Joe Philbin, Todd Bowles, Cincinnati Bengals' defensive coordinator, Mike Zimmer, and Chicago Bears' special team’s coordinator,
Dave Toub.
The Dolphins expressed little interest in Todd Bowles, who took over after Sparano was fired, even though he led the team 2-1 in the last three games.
The Oakland Raiders intend to consider him for their vacant head coach position.
Keeping in mind that Bowles appears to be a defence specialist, the need for the Raiders to improve their defence may turn out to be a strong reason why he may end up with the Raiders.
McCoy was hired by the Broncos after the 2008 season as the new offensive coordinator and quarterbacks' coach. Under him the Denver offense ranked at the 23rd position in yards. Despite that, McCoy gained due fame when the Broncos reached the
playoffs.
However, a defeat to the New England Patriots last Saturday meant that McCoy was free and the Dolphins succeeded in taking permission to interview him.
The former quarterback has also worked with the Carolina Panthers from 2000 to 2008.
