Miami Dolphins hire Kevin Coyle and Mike Sherman – NFL News Update
The Miami Dolphins have hired Kevin Coyle and Mike Sherman as their defensive and offensive coordinators respectively.
It seems that Dolphins’ head coach, Joe Philbin, returned a favour of Sherman by hiring him. As the former head coach of Green Bay Packers, Sherman had Philbin as an assistant coach in 2003. So Philbin decided to return the favour by having him hired on
Friday.
Coyle interviewed with the Dolphins on Wednesday for their defensive coordinator post.
Though Philbin and Coyle have never worked together in a single team in the National Football League (NFL), both are close friends.
It could be possible that the close relationship which they enjoy have possibly hastened Coyle’s hiring.
Coyle has worked for nine seasons as defensive backs’ coach of the Cincinnati Bengals since 2001.
Philbin had been recently hired by the Dolphins’ owner, Stephen Ross, and general manager, Jeff Ireland, as the new head coach after having sidelined former interim coach, Todd Bowles.
It seems that Philbin, the former assistant coach of the Green Bay Packers, now decided to sideline Bowles further as Bowles who himself is respected defence specialist was not considered for the defensive coordinator job.
Bowles had done a remarkable job having led the Dolphins 2-1 in the last three games he coached. It, however, turns out that Bowles has lost favour with the Dolphins management and hence was neglected.
Philbin decided to bring men of his own choice in. He said:
"They are exactly what I am looking for in terms of leadership, character, and teaching ability. They are both very passionate about the game of football and the players they coach, and that enthusiasm is evident in the meeting rooms and on the field. They
are excellent family men and I'm thrilled they are joining the Dolphins' football family. I can't wait to get started to work with them.”
Both Sherman and Coyle bring with them loads of experience to the Dolphins.
The 56-year-old Coyle has an experience of coaching for 35 years. He spent the last 11 years with the Bengals.
On the other hand, the 57-year-old Sherman brings along with him 33 years of experience, which includes 10 years of experience as a head coach. Sherman spent six years training the Packers as a head coach and remained the head coach of Texas A&M for four
years.
The Dolphins failed to reach the playoffs this year ending up at 8-8 which led to the firing of the then coach Tony Sparano.
