Miami Dolphins interview Joe Philbin, Todd Bowles second time – NFL News Update
Green Bay Packers' offensive coordinator, Joe Philbin had a second interview with owner, Stephen Ross on Wednesday, to deliberate on his future as the new head coach.
Philbin had left a very favourable impression on the Dolphins’ team when he interviewed with the Dolphins, last time on January 7, 2012.
Philbin has had a long time with the Packers team whom he has been serving since 2003. He took over as the offensive coordinator of Green Bay in 2007.
Philbin appears to be a strong candidate for the head coach slot.
"He's a special, special human being. I think he would make an excellent head coach. I've said that before." Packers coach Mike McCarthy said of him.
Also going through a second interview was Dolphins interim coach Todd Bowles. Both the candidates interviewed with the owner and general manager Jeff Ireland.
The Dolphins have already restricted their search to three candidates according to the Miami Herald.
The three candidates are Joe Philbin, Todd Bowles, and Denver Broncos offensive coordinator Mike McCoy.
The Dolphins have been looking for a head coach after Tony Sparano was fired following the Dolphins’ loss to the Philadelphia Eagles that saw them eliminated from the playoff race.
Dolphins’ owner Stephen Ross desired to see a change in the team and sacked Sparano replacing him with interim coach Todd Bowles for the remaining three games.
The search for a new coach had begun since then. Until recently the Dolphins had their eyes on Jeff Fisher, who backed out on Friday after joining the St. Louis Rams as their head coach. Fisher had been seen as a very likely probable for the Dolphins who
had to initiate a new search for a coach.
Bowles is a strong contender for the head coach slot having led the Dolphins brilliantly in the last three games. He had an impressive record of 2-1 but it seems that the Oakland Raiders are also interested in hiring him for their head coach vacancy.
Mike McCoy who was also being viewed by the Oakland Raiders recently seemed so confident of his chances with the Dolphins that he had his name removed from the Raiders list of potential candidates.
McCoy is currently the offensive coordinator and quarterback coach of the Broncos since 2008. Though the Broncos offense ranked at the 23rd number in National Football League (NFL) under him, yet his achievement included helping the team reach
the playoffs this season.
The Dolphins had also interviewed Cincinnati Bengals defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer and Chicago Bears special teams’ coordinator Dave Toub but no longer have an eye on them.
Meanwhile, Philbin also been allowed to interview with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, so he has an option left in case he does not land a job with the Dolphins.
