Miami Dolphins restrict hunt for new head coach to three men – NFL News Update
The Miami Dolphins have now restricted their search for a new head coach down to three candidates.
This was reported by the Miami Herald on Tuesday. The three candidates who made it as the finalist are interim coach Todd Bowles, Green Bay Packers’ offensive coordinator Joe Philbin and Denver Broncos offensive coordinator Mike McCoy.
The Dolphins have been without a permanent head coach ever since Tony Sparano was fired after the Dolphins’ loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.
The Dolphins had been eliminated from the playoff race and the Dolphins’ owner Stephen Ross had then wanted to see a change in the team. So, he had Sparano replaced with interim coach Todd Bowles, even though there were just three games left in the season,
while the team began the search for a new head coach.
Bowles put in quite a favourable impression as he led the Dolphins 2-1 in the last three games this season. That makes him a strong candidate. However, it seems that Bowles is also being considered by Oakland Raiders who appear more interested than the Dolphins
in hiring him for their vacant head coach slot. Nevertheless, Bowles appears to be a strong candidate for the Dolphins’ head coach position.
On the other hand, Mike McCoy became available after the Broncos lost to the New England Patriots last weekend.
McCoy has been with the Broncos since 2008 as an offensive coordinator and quarterback coach. McCoy helped the Broncos reach the playoffs which was an achievement despite the fact that the Broncos offense ranked at the 23rd position in National
Football League (NFL). McCoy has been interviewed by the Dolphins on Monday.
The third potential candidate, Joe Philbin has already interviewed with the Dolphins and left quite an impression on the team. His next interview with Ross is expected to take place on Wednesday.
At the same time, Philbin has also been given the permission to interview with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Earlier on, the Dolphins had their eyes on Jeff Fisher who was the strongest contender and had also been interviewed for the job.
After waiting for several days, the Dolphins found out that Fisher had chosen to be the St. Louis Rams head coach instead on Friday. The move made the Dolphins initiate a new search for a head coach.
Among the candidates whom the Dolphins have already interviewed are Joe Philbin, Todd Bowles, Cincinnati Bengals defensive coordinator, Mike Zimmer and Chicago Bears' special teams’ coordinator, Dave Toub.
The Miami Herald has reported that Zimmer is no longer being considered by the Dolphins for the head coach job, thus leaving the ground open to just three candidates.
Ross will now be interviewing these three candidates to decide who lands as the future head coach.
