Miami Dolphins rookie QB Ryan Tannehill appears destined for backup role – NFL News
Please sit, watch and learn before jumping on the starting quarterback position – is the message to Miami Dolphins’ rookie QB, Ryan Tannehill, from his colleague, running back, Reggie Bush.
Irrespective of the question whether Dolphins’ coaches will heed to the piece of advice from Reggie, this leaves the QB competition for the starting role between the incumbent, Matt Moore, and veteran, David Garrard, who is in his first year of career in
Miami.
Bush, while chatting with a local newspaper journalist, said:
"I would probably agree with you on that. Ryan can watch the veterans and learn. When he gets the call, he'll be ready."
Even if there is a disagreement in the team to Bush's view, the situation appears set to leave the leading role for either of the above mentioned players to fight for.
The problem with Ryan is that he has very limited experience on the starting line. He could manage only 19 starts in the college league before becoming pro. So, he needs more training and grooming at the position.
Also, Tannehill has been given an opportunity for taking snaps with starters in the team’s three-day mandatory minicamp and he reportedly failed to impress onlookers and most importantly his coaches.
Since then a number of reports have weighed the rookie’s placement at any number of backup position, most probably at number 3.
If Moore wins the top role, Garrard is most likely to be his backup at No. 2. Any injury problem hitting any of the two players can promote Tannehill further up at the backup position or may be to the leading role.
Otherwise, it looks certain that the rookie is destined for a backup position, for the initial half of the season at least. He can promote himself to the top slot by growing in the offensive role quickly.
With Tannehill heading for a backup position, the starting role competition will be between Moore and Garrard. The team should be able to decide their next offence leader at the training camp, which is due to open later this month. There is a possibility
that the competition is dragged to preseason, commencing soon after the end of the training camp in August.
