Miami Dolphins rookie QB Ryan Tannehill still has time to impress as starter – NFL News
Ryan Tannehill, Miami Dolphins’ rookie quarterback, who is in competition with two other QBs for the starting role, is being looked at as a project needed to be groomed in the longer run.
The rookie was given an opportunity to take snaps with starters on last day of the team’s three-day mandatory camp. He apparently failed to impress the coaches and officials.
His particular problem was that he could not handle throws in traffic, and now it looks the team will handle his situation as a project, rather than trying him out straight on the starting line.
It has not been confirmed officially by the coaches, and the rookie possibly can be given a couple of more shots at the starting position during training camp.
If Tannehill is out of the QBs’ competition, the role will be left down to fight between the incumbent, Matt Moore and this year’s veteran arrival, David Garrard.
At the moment, the real competition is between Moore and Garrard. Even though officially it has not been indicated by the team, odds seem to be in favour of the incumbent.
Nevertheless, it is too early to project anyone in the leading position as all three players seem to be very much in the competition.
If Ryan is pushed back in case of his failure to impress in the training camp, he is most likely to land at the number three spot. The most likely scenario will be then that Moore - the leader, Garrard at the second position and Tannehill at number three.
Even if that happens, some commentators say it in no way means that Tannehill cannot be developed for the No. 1 QB position. They see the rookie as a project who can be trained and groomed in the longer run.
Dolphins will open their training camp later this month, which will run through to the middle of the next.
The team has scheduled a number of training and practice sessions during the entire tenure of the camp and all players stand getting enough time to prove their talent and skills.
Tannehill will also have an opportunity to perform during the preseason campaign, which happens to be the official deadline for the team to decide who is going to their leading QB this season.
