In this new series of our season analysis, we will look into Dolphins performance in a game-by-game format till Week 15 of the regular season.
The first part of this season analysis will review the games played from Week 1 to Week 3. The biggest addition to the Dolphins roster was the drafting of franchise quarterback Ryan Tannehill.
The Phins have only been above .500 just once this season. However, the team as well as fans know that there is a long way to go for the team to reach quality and depth in their game.
However, they have the base to go on further, as they have good number of young players who could mould their future.
Week 1: Houston Texans
Dolphins faced a tough challenge early in the season as they faced the mammoth Houston Texans in the season opener.
As expected, Dolphins struggled to get a grip on things as they lost the game 10-30. Tannehill went through the biggest challenge of his professional career as he faced the stout Texans defence.
Although Tannehill played well in the first quarter, things got out of control in second quarter as the offence turned the ball over four times. It included three interceptions by Tannehill.
Tannehill, the eighth overall pick of this year’s draft, finished the game with 20 out of 36 for 219 yards and no scores.
The star running back Reggie Bush also failed to give substantial influence in the game. He ran 14 times for 69 rushing yards.
Texans were able to score three touchdowns during the span of second quarter, after which their defence managed to keep things under grasp for the rest of the game.
Week 2: Oakland Raiders
Dolphins got a taste of victory in Week 2 as they got a dominating 35-13 victory over Oakland Raiders.
It took a superb performance from Bush to give his team the win. Bush carried the ball 26 times for 172 rushing yards and scored two touchdowns.
Tannehill also threw first touchdown pass of his career. He also ran for his first-ever rushing touchdown.
The quarterback finished the game with 18 of 30 for 200 yards and had an interception-free game.
Dolphins were trailing to Raiders in the first half, but managed to score 28 points in the second half to secure the win.
Week 3: New York Jets
It was Dolphins’ first game of the season against any of their division rivals as they took on New York Jets in Week 3.
Both teams went neck and neck throughout the regulation. However, Jets got a 23-20 victory after scoring a field goal in overtime.
Dolphins had a chance to secure a win for themselves in overtime, but kicker Den Carpenter missed a tough field goal.
The most saddening news for Dolphins in this game was the injury to their in-form running back. Bush left the field with a knee injury.
Tannehill remained unimpressive as he finished with 16 of 36 for just 196 yards and failed to score even a single touchdown.
Dolphins finished Week 3 with a1-2 record, but the loss against Jets could have been avoided had they shown consistency in passing game.
