Miami Dolphins sign quarterback Patrick Ramsey
Sources have confirmed to the NFL Network's Michael Lombardi that the Miami Dolphins have signed 31-year-old quarterback Patrick Ramsey.
The news of Ramsey's signing comes a day after the Dolphins saw their top two quarterbacks go down with injuries in the team's 29-17 win over the Tennessee Titans.
The Dolphins are the fifth team Ramsey has been affiliated with since being released to free agency by the Denver Broncos in March of 2009, which was also the last time he actually threw a pass in a competitive
game.
The Dolphins had been looking to shake things up by giving Chad Pennington the start at quarterback over Chad Henne, but Pennington got just two plays off before leaving the game after once again injuring
the shoulder that has already been surgically repaired three times. Henne went out in the third quarter with a knee injury.
Interestingly enough it was Pennington himself who was the incumbent in New York when the Jets signed Ramsey in 2006 after a four-year stint with the Washington Redskins. Ramsey threw only one pass that
year before being cut at the end of the season.
The signing of Ramsey is surely seen as a move to strengthen depth at the position, as the starter's role will surely be handed to Tyler Thigpen who came in on Sunday in relief and completed four of six
passes and one touchdown.
"I’ve got a lot of confidence in Tyler," Dolphins head coach Tony Sparano told reporters recently. "This guy has really been throwing the football well in practice and has made tremendous improvement.
It’s one of the reasons why we repped him the way we did in preseason."
Ramsey won the spot over several other quarterbacks that the Dolphins worked out on Monday, and Ramsey is expected to take Pennington's spot on the team's official roster as Pennington, now 34 years old,
will contemplate what to do with his future.
