Miami Dolphins unlikely to land QB Ryan Tannehill starting role this season – NFL News
Miami Dolphins’ are unlikely to land the starting job to quarterback Ryan Tannehill after the rookie’s rocky performance in the team’s 17-23 loss to Carolina Panthers on Friday showed he is far from making a claim for the leadership role.
As per Tannehill’s performance card, he was able to complete 11 out of 23 passes but the most negative point of the form was his sacking by Panthers’ defence three times.
Although coach Joe Philbin did not offer any comment on the player’s performance, he clearly looked disappointed. On the other hand, it might be a good development for the coach that Tannehill’s shaky start on the offensive line has made the selection of
this season’s leader rather easy for him.
With veteran David Garrard out for a couple of weeks with an injury scare and Tannehill most likely out of the race, the starting role is left down to the incumbent Matt Moore.
If David is able to return to action in two weeks, he certainly has the chance to lead the team’s offence straightaway. He was on top of the Dolphins’ depth chart before suffering the blow.
While Moore has the experience of playing as a starter, Dolphins are least likely to try him out on the line again, especially in presence of Garrard.
The team had set great expectations from Tannehill at the time of his selection off this year’s draft but a problem with him getting the role straightaway is that the rookie does not have much experience as a starter. He played at quarterback position in
the college league only for a year.
Although all the stakeholders agree that the aspiring Tannehill has the potential to name himself amongst the top QBs in the league, he needs more training and real game experience. He is expected to get better after spending a season or two with the team
at a backup position.
If a scenario emerges that Garrard is given the starting role, Moore is most likely to be placed at No. 2 and the rookie will subsequently get the No. 3 position.
This might be a disappointing development for the player given his profile is not of a player fitting the third position, but he does not have an alternative unless he moves out to another side in the league or Dolphins cut one of the three top-notch QBs.
