Miami Heat coach Erik Spoelstra visits Manila to attend the NBA fit program – Basketball News
Erik Spoelstra recently went to Manila in order to be part of the NBA FIT program, which will constitute a series of fitness events aimed at educating young athletes on the importance of staying fit and healthier lifestyle options.
The current Miami Heat Coach, who was part of the team that lost last year’s NBA Finals to the Dallas Mavericks, also stated that his team has gone through a lot and it has only made them stronger.
"We didn’t get our goal but it’s another learning experience. It makes us stronger, more resilient for next season," said the Heat coach. “There were tremendous expectations about the team but it was a great ride for us. We’ve
gone through a lot of things which is similar to life. We managed the up and downs of an NBA season well and we have learned a lot from it,"
Spoelstra seemed certain that his ‘big 3’ along with the rest of the team will bounce back confidently this season.
However, his current focus remains on his Philippines tour. Spoelstra displayed strong feelings for this area as his mother was also a Filipino and he expressed his desire to work for the betterment of the region, through similar
basketball initiatives.
“The game has been good to me so it’s my way of giving back especially to my heritage. It makes my week very special," stated Spoelstra.
NBA FIT is a worldwide comprehensive plan aimed at encouraging health initiatives amongst children and families in general, so that a better and more productive lifestyle can be achieved.
The NBA FIT Philippines 2011 is spearheaded by Spoelstra himself, who will be accompanied by some of the Heat coaching staff and celebrities. It received a resounding feedback last year and has prompted Spoelstra and his team to
follow it up with another event this year as well.
These clinics will hold health seminars aimed at educating people about three main categories: regular physical fitness, a better daily diet and smarter and more effective health choices.
What is expected to be a weeklong event will also feature Heat assistant coaches David Fizdale and Chad Kammerer. The seminars are expected to be held at schools, colleges and universities, so that most children can benefit from
these programs.
Spoelstra also recalled last year’s event and only had good things to say about it. “I had a really fulfilling trip last year working with Filipino families and youth and I am thrilled to come back to the Philippines under the
NBA FIT program” said Spoelstra.
This joint venture with the NBA FIT program is also expected to boost the popularity of the game in the region.
