Miami Heat’s Haslem arrested on drugs charge
Miami Heat power-forward Udonis Haslem was arrested on Sunday afternoon for possession of marijuana after a traffic stop.
Haslem was charged with possession of more than 20 grams of the drug. The offence is a third-degree felony and carries a maximum punishment of $5,000 and a five-year prison sentence. The 30-year-old was stopped by police mid-afternoon during a traffic stop and according to a police press release the policeman who stopped Haslem smelled "an odour of marijuana from within the vehicle.”
The passenger in Haslem’s car, Antwain Fleming, was also arrested and was charged with possessing less than 20 grams of marijuana, a first-degree misdemeanour which could bring a $1,000 fine and one-year prison term.
Haslem was also charged with illegal window tint, according to Florida Highway Patrol spokesman Sgt. Mark Wysocky. Mysocky also added “after the subsequent search, Mr. Haslem and Mr. Fleming were placed under arrest.” Haslem was released on bond just after 10 p.m.
Haslem could now be suspended from the league by commissioner David Stern, and if the seven-year veteran is found guilty and serves jail-time he could find his new five-year deal with the Heat voided.
