Miami Hurricanes QB out for at least two weeks
An Associated Press report out of Coral Gables, Florida, read that the Miami Hurricanes junior quarterback Jacory Harris will be out two more weeks to deal with post-concussion symptoms.
Harris and the Hurricanes were visiting the Virginia Cavaliers when in the second quarter, he dropped back in the pocket and was hammered by defensive tackle John-Kevin Dolce.
"When you chop the head off a giant, the rest of the body goes with it," said Dolce, according to
espn.go.com. "Jacory was their leader and what changed the game was taking him out."
To add more insult to injury, the pass was intercepted by Virginia. The blow was felt deeply by the offensive line.
"We let our brother get hurt," said center Tyler Horn.
"There's no worse feeling than seeing that and knowing that's because of the offensive line, that's because of us."
Harris has thrown so far this season for 14 touchdowns, 1646 yards and has a quarterback rating of 120.19. He has also played in every game this season, leading the Hurricanes to a record of 5-3 and a second place spot in the coastal division of the Atlantic
Coast Conference (ACC).
If Harris misses two weeks, he will be missing three important in conference games against Maryland Terrapins, Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets and Virginia Tech, with each of the teams pressing to get into the ACC championship game.
In Harris’ place will be backup quarterback, and freshman Stephen Morris, who has seen limited action to start his college career, except for the game against Virginia when he came in for Harris in the second quarter.
Morris’ statistics from last week’s loss to Virginia are decent enough for a freshman, having completed nine of 22 passes for 162 yards and two touchdowns. He also showed signs of inexperience, throwing two interceptions against a 75th ranked defence.
The other quarterback that Miami will have on the bench will be junior Spencer Whipple, who had four appearances so far this season. He was replaced by Morris last week because of his two interceptions thrown in six passing attempts.
