Miami Marlins’ Emilio Bonifacio injures his thumb and is likely to miss the whole season - MLB News
An unfortunate reality prevails for the Miami Marlins. The latest injury to their second baseman Emilio Bonifacio means that the floundering offence has weakened further. The injury occurred while Bonifacio jumped in the game on Friday to make a play on
the ball. The thumb, that he has struggled with before, was affected in the process and X-ray by him afterward signaled that his time in the season is almost over.
So far, Bonifacio’s batting average is .269 in the season. Although he has made just one home-run, his on-base percentage is impressive. His outage from the season is a big blow to the team as the Marlins are already looking for hitters that can help their
offence.
In light of the fact that the Marlins have traded Omar Infante, one can understand the mediocrity of their offence now with the absence of Bonifacio.
As a result, their runs-production may suffer in the upcoming games. The Marlins’ attempt to end up the season on a high by taking their winning percentage to a respectable level will not be successful.
The Marlins started off the season on the back of higher expectations by the fans. The new uniforms, newly built Marlins ballpark and above all the star studded roster gave the fans hopes that the club is going to experience one of the greatest seasons in
their history.
However, the expectations ruined when the team piled up defeats and ended up finding a dismal position on the table right from the beginning. Since the clubs’ poor run continued until few weeks before the trade deadline, they began selling off pieces on
their roster.
Meanwhile, the Marlins’ manager Ozzie Guillen has talked of the injury by Bonifacio. He is least hopeful that he can return in the season. Right in the first sight, it was apparent that the second baseman is going to take a long period of time to come back
playing in the Major League.
"When he was on the ground, I knew something was bad," Guillen said. "I just saw it right away. Same thumb. Same injury. I don't expect him back this year."
As the Bonifacio is out now, Miami will be considering various options for replacement. They will be looking to find an appropriate hitter who can strengthen their offence.
