Miami Marlins’ Emilio Bonifacio on 15-day disabled list with knee sprain - MLB Update
Miami Marlins’ outfielder Emilio Bonifacio suffers a right knee pain during the game and as a result, he has been put on the 15-day disabled list, which is the third trip in the season so far by him.
While in his previous two stints it was the trouble with his thumb, this time the sprain in the right knee has become the reason for a stay on the disabled list. Exact timeline of his return cannot be determined at this time.
However the MRI report is encouraging which indicates that he may be back in the season within three weeks. His right knee is out of danger and will not take a long period of time for healing.
His contribution in terms of stealing singles for the Marlins cannot be denied in the season. For the struggling offence of the Marlins, his absence in the line-up is a worrying sign.
An injury to a player who holds immense importance defensively is a setback for the team. In light of the fact that the Marlins’ position on the table has declined, improving the winning percentage has become even harder now after his injury.
Meanwhile, Marlins’ manager Ozzie Guillen will be hoping that the rest of the hitters in the line-up take up extra responsibility now. In particular, the shortstop Jose Reyes will be asked for base stealing and for increasing activity on the bases.
Guillen appears to be against the idea of bringing Bonifacio back in the season at the earliest.
He is of the view that the fact they have nearly lost the race for winning a play-off spot can be a reason for keeping him out throughout the season. Guillen maintains that instead of increasing the likelihood of sustaining the injury again by Bonifacio,
using him in the next season is a better option.
"If we're not going anywhere, why are we going to take a chance for him to get hurt again, to go to Minor League rehab and do all kinds of stuff to come back?" Guillen said. "To me, it's up to him. But why risk something that shouldn't be risked?"
However Guillen clarifies that if Bonifacio is eager to come back, he will not be stopped.
