Miami Marlins’ Hanley Ramirez asserts that he is shortstop – MLB Update
While praising Jose Reyes, Miami Marlins’ Hanley Ramirez asserted that he will continue considering himself as shortstop until the management speaks to him about moving to third base to make room for Reyes at his natural position.
It is becoming highly evident that the Marlins will lure Reyes to the ballclub before the next season after New York Mets have failed to come up with an offer to retain their All-Star shortstop. Reyes is looking for a long-term lucrative deal or a short-term
deal with an inflated monetary incentive and the Marlins are satisfied to fulfil these demands in a bid to strengthen their roster.
Reyes is testing waters in the free agent market for the first time in his career, after spending his entire time with the Mets since the inception of his Major League career. The Mets want other teams to determine a price tag for Reyes, who is an unusual
talent at shortstop with an offensive ability that is better than most in the Majors. His batting title this past season makes it more difficult for the Mets to make a concrete offer to their home-grown All-Star and the management thinks that it will be more
appropriate if they have an idea where other teams rank him.
Having said this, the Mets have also asserted their intent of slashing the payroll from 140-million-dollars to 115-million-dollars and rest assured, Reyes’ addition to the roster will not enable the management to reduce the payroll drastically.
The Marlins, on the contrary, are looking to revamp their ballclub after failing to make an impact this past season. With a new ballpark, a new manager, a new team name and a new jersey, the management now wants a few big names in the ranks to ensure better
results when the next season kicks-off in April, next year.
Ramirez stressed that the organisation needs Reyes and that the management is trying to build a team that is not easy to defeat. However, he was not comfortable with the idea of moving to third base if Reyes ends up signing a deal with the Marlins. Team
president David Samson remained calm on this matter and stated that he will comment once a signing has been made.
