Miami Marlins’ Jose Reyes in favour of contract extension of New York Mets’ David Wright-MLB Update
As the reports circle around stating that New York Mets will begin negotiations with David Wright regarding contract renewal, their former team-mate and the current Miami Marlins’ shortstop Jose Reyes favours the idea of his retention by the club.
He is of the view that the Mets must offer him a contract extension and should not let the third baseman test free agency.
Reyes was not pursued by the Mets last year when he was under almost the same situation that Wright faces today. The Mets, owing to their financial constraints, did not have enough money to keep Reyes in the club by granting him an expensive deal.
Reyes, after not being offered anything from the Mets, had to invoke free agency option. He ended up becoming part of the Marlins.
Wright is the top performer from the Mets this year. He is looking forward to be in this organisation until the conclusion of his career.
At the same time, he will be having high expectations with regard to contract extension. As a last resort, Wright has hinted time-and-again that he can go into free agency.
Most of the experts believe that Wright deserves the fruit of his excellent performances that he put up in the Mets’ uniform.
They substantiate their contention on the fact that Wright is one of the best third basemen the Mets have produced ever in the club’s history. He is crucial to the image of the team.
"If they let him go, that's gonna be difficult to see the New York Mets without David Wright. I can't imagine that. You never know in this game what's gonna happen, but I wish all the best to David. He's a good friend of mine," Reyes said.
Reyes explains that he cannot fancy Mets without Wright. He has offered his best wishes to Wright.
The Mets are equally receptive of the idea that Wright should stay in the club for a number of years. They will be hoping that the modalities of the deal are formulated and made acceptable for Wright.
It will be interesting to keep track of the reports related to negotiations and the possible agreement between the two parties.
