Miami Marlins’ Juan Carlos Oviedo goes through Tommy John surgery - MLB Update
After injuring his elbow during a rehab assignment, it has been reported that Juan Carlos Oviedo has undergone Tommy John surgery which means that he will remain absent for the greater part of the 2013 season.
Oviedo was all set to return to the current season on July 23 after serving a ban of eighth weeks that Major League Baseball had imposed on him for faking his identity and age. The Miami Marlins needed someone like him in their bullpen as he is a quality
reliever and is capable of recording saves for the team late in the innings. However his injury diminished the probability of his possible return to the season.
Oviedo will be disheartened at the moment because after he was allowed to move to the USA he was jubilant and upbeat to make his mark. As he spent the whole off-season in the Dominican Republic getting his name and age corrected, he was hopeful that by resolving
all the issues expeditiously he will be considered for playing with Miami in the season.
However, much to his disappointment, even the permission of flying to the USA did not result in his immediate appearance in the Major League.
Right now he will be focusing on the 2013 season and how he can rehabilitate as soon as possible. Tommy John surgery has become a routine for the pitchers. Oviedo can take encouragement from the fact that a number of hurlers have put up stunning performances
after coming back from this type of surgery.
Andy Mota, the agent of Oviedo, is of the view that most likely the pitcher will play the latter half of the 2013 season. At the same time he is conscious of the possibility that he starts from the 2014 season.
"We hope everything comes out well and Juan Carlos can return toward the end of next year or in 2014", said Oviedo's agent, Andy Mota. "Relatively, Tommy John surgery has become a common procedure from which most pitchers come back."
Juan Carlos holds a tremendous career record.
Although he is about to become a free agent after this season, it will not be surprising if he is acquired by any organisation immediately. It will be interesting to see whether the Marlins retrain him or not.
