Miami Marlins’ Larry Beinfest keen on securing a deal with Jose Reyes – MLB Update
In an interesting move, the Miami Marlins have expressed their desire of signing Jose Reyes for the next season in a bid to improve the newly named franchise. Formerly the Florida Marlins, the franchise revealed a new uniform, a new name and a new ballpark
this past week. Earlier, the management signed Ozzie Guillen as new manager of the team at the end of the recently concluded season, revamping the entire structure of the ballclub.
In what has been a major change in the approach of the ballclub, the Marlins have asserted that they plan to inflate their payroll for the next season in a bid to qualify for the playoffs and then possibly win the National League pennant. To achieve that,
the management has courted players such as Albert Pujols, Mark Buehrle and Reyes, but have shown an extra liking for the latter.
The Marlins made a preliminary offer of 90-million-dollars over six-years to the 2011 batting champion, but the initial price tag is just to show that the ballclub is serious for the player. The New York Mets, who have restrained from making an offer for
their home-grown All-Star thus far, are under immense pressure in the aftermath of the bid and are now worried on losing their shortstop to a division rival.
Praising Reyes, Marlins’ Larry Beinfest said, “He’s just a dynamic player — we’ve seen him a lot in our division. The speed tool, the fielding, the enthusiasm — he plays with just a lot of joy on the baseball field. He’s a game-changer in a lot of ways,
because of the tools he brings. He’s a tough guy to play against.”
Although the Mets do have a back-up plan if Reyes signs elsewhere, the thought of losing a rare shortstop talent will be unpleasant. A six-year deal upfront will be hard to match for the Mets and a higher monetary incentive is the only option which the franchise
now has.
While Albert Pujols is a different story altogether, Reyes’ interest of playing under Guillen is another factor that will help the team secure a deal with the player. While talks will continue, it will be interesting to see how the deal shapes up.
