Miami Marlins’ Mark Buehrle sympathetic toward Ozzie Guillen - MLB Update
Starting pitcher Mark Buehrle stands up for Ozzie Guillen, stating that he was not entirely responsible for the failures. He believes excessive media scrutiny of Guillen led the management to oust him.
Buehrle has acknowledged that they were not up to the mark. That is what sums up the expedition of the Marlins, according to him.
In doing so, he has hinted that blaming Guillen for everything is unjustified.
Expressing his surprise at the firing of Guillen, Buehrle is of the view that he did not think his stay in the club will come to an end after just one year.
Guillen was handpicked by the owner Jeffrey Loria at the time of hiring. It was hard to expect that his confidence in his abilities will disappear soon.
Ozzie bore the brunt of the Marlins’ horrible 2012 regular season. He lost his job and more significantly he made enemies. He is abhorred by most of the Marlins’ fans at the moment due to his comments about Fidel Castro.
Guillen can take heart from the fact that at-least his players are speaking positively about him. Earlier Jose Reyes also lauded the contributions of Guillen for the team while expressing sympathy with him.
Buehrle has elaborated that making Guillen a scapegoat is unfair. The fact of the matter is that the Marlins were below par compared to other oppositions in the National League. They did not live up to the challenges. Their bullpen, offence and defence were
far from satisfactory.
Against the backdrop of such weaknesses in the team, disappointment was inevitable.
“I’m surprised,” said Buehrle. “There’s a lot of stuff that us as players or the media didn’t pay attention to that caused his firing. For one, we didn’t play very good. Coming into spring training and having the team we had, the Marlins thought we’d come
out and compete, and obviously that didn’t happen.”
Buehrle was one of the few players that somehow performed better. He carried out his role as a starter reasonably well. While not as impressive as the team would expect ideally, he posted a respectable ERA in the season.
He will be looking to improve next year and make sure he wins a greater number of matches.
