Miami Marlins: Regular season results – MLB April 2011
Miami Marlins had made a terrific comeback during Spring Training season as they secured ten straight wins to improve their win-loss record to 16-15. Miami’s manager, Edwin Rodriguez was very pleased with the way his team had bounced back and he aimed to
give even better results in the regular season.
The Marlins made a solid start to their regular season campaign as they crushed New York Mets 6-2 in the opening game of a three match series. John Buck hit a grand slam on his debut for Florida and the Marlins defeated the Mets 6-2 to take a 1-0 lead in
the series. Rodriguez was delighted with the result and he praised the efforts of his men in a post match interview.
"Solid defense and clutch hitting," Marlins’ manager Edwin Rodriguez said. "Can't ask for anything more than that. I think we showed what we're capable of doing."
However, the Marlins failed to live up to expectations in the following game and the Mets came back strongly to level the series at 1-all. Making a large number of unforced errors in the game, Edwin Rodriguez’s side was outplayed in almost all departments
of the game. Struggling to handle the pressure, the Marlins experienced a humiliating defeat in the third and final game as well as they suffered their first series loss in regular season.
Looking to restore some of their lost pride, Marlins raised their game to a higher level in their next three game series against Washington Nationals. Holding their nerves, the Marlins earned a memorable 3-2 victory in a thrilling game one of the series.
Donnie Murphy delivered a bases-loaded, two-out single in the tie-breaking tenth innings as the Marlins rallied past the Nationals to gain the psychological advantage in the series.
"When your teammates are coming out there to congratulate you and cheer, it's fun," Murphy said.
In game two, John Buck hit his second home-run of the season to help his side come from behind to clinch their first series win of the season.
Marlins were the superior of the two sides in their next series against the Houston Astros. Securing a comfortable win in the opening two games, Rodriguez and his men earned their second series win in five days. The Marlins ended the month of April with
wins over Cincinnati Reds, Pittsburgh Pirates, Colorado Rockies and Los Angeles Dodgers, which improved their win-loss record to an impressive 16-9.
The Marlins were looking good as they continued to build some much needed confidence into their team. The team were hoping to carry their winning momentum in the next month of the regular season. Marlins were showing the other teams that they were there
to compete and could do so quite effectively.
