Miami Marlins: Spring Training results – MLB 2011
Miami Marlins made a decent start to their Spring Training campaign as they outclassed St. Louis Cardinals 6-3 in a fairly one sided contest on February 28th. Matt Dominguez hit a towering two run homer in his first plate appearance as the Marlins opened
their training season schedule with an emphatic 6-3 win.
"Made solid contact and it happened to go out," said Dominguez, the Marlins' first-round pick in the 2007 amateur draft. "Not only just getting a hit, but a home-run in the first at-bat, it's kind of big."
Miami’s manager Edwin Rodriguez was absolutely delighted with the way his team responded to difficult situations during the contest and he aimed to give similar results in the upcoming games as well.
"Good game," Marlins’ manager Edwin Rodriguez said. "Anibal Sanchez, he threw very good pitches. I think he hanged two breaking balls, but other than that, he was very good."
However, the Marlins failed to deliver the goods in their next four games, which damaged their win-loss record to 1-4. Against Washington Nationals, Edwin Rodriguez and his men failed to live up to the expectation as they experienced a humiliating 8-4 loss.
Wasting too many opportunities, they paid the price for their large number of unforced errors against the Houston Astros.
Although they put up a decent fight in a game against the New York Mets, the Marlins, once again, failed to control their nerves as they were overpowered in a closely contested 2-4 encounter.
Crushing the inform Boston Red Sox, Miami Marlins finally managed to get things back on track with a sensational 11-2 victory. Dominating the opposition team in almost all aspects of the game, Rodriguez’s side looked in much more control of their game play.
Claiming four straight wins, the Marlins then improved their win-loss record to 5-5.
In a game against Detroit Tigers, the Marlins executed their game plan to perfection to earn a memorable 9-5 victory. Marlins’ centre-fielder, Dewayne Wise went 1 for 2 with a walk and Rodriguez lauded his efforts in a post match interview.
However, following their win, the Marlins were unable to maintain their form and they lost nine straight games, which resulted in a tremendous amount of de-motivation within their camp. But Edwin Rodriguez and his men stayed focused and they ended the training
season with ten straight wins, improving their win-loss record to 16-15. It was an amazing accomplishment by the Marlins considering they were 6-15 at one stage.
The Marlins showed that they have the talent and the will to win games against some of the top tier teams in the league. The other teams were certainly taking notice now.
