Miami Marlins acquire Baltimore Orioles’ Joe Mahoney from waiver - MLB Update
First baseman, Joe Mahoney has been acquired by Miami Marlins after Baltimore Orioles sent him for assignment in order to make space for their recently included Danny Valencia, who plays at the same position.
Mahoney has been performing well in the Minors but he was not given many opportunities by the Orioles. After becoming a part of the Marlins, he can expect that he will be allowed to play matches in the Majors and given full opportunities to show off his
talent.
The Marlins, arguably the weakest team in the National League East, do not boast the presence of star players in the team. Especially after their recent fire sale including Jose Reyes, they have downgraded to a Minor League type of a team.
All this shows that there is not much competition among players for various positions in the field, which means that even if Mahoney does not unleash his best, he will probably continue gaining experience at the Major League level with the Marlins.
Mahoney can build his resume while being a part of this club. Step-by-step, he can assume the reputation of being an everyday Major League player.
Eventually, he can set himself up for inviting attention of some of the big market clubs toward him. In this way, he can achieve his desired goals.
Mahoney is looking forward to play at the first-base for Miami during 2013 season. He is focusing on Spring Training right now and proving his credentials.
“After that year (2010) and even the year before that and even my year in 2011, I thought I’d get an opportunity,” Mahoney said. “But unfortunately I didn’t and they went another direction. I’m excited to move on and work with the Marlins and make their
team out of spring training and be their first baseman.”
Furthermore, switching to a new organisation is satisfying for Mahoney. He says the time when he was designated by the Orioles, he realised that he must part ways with the club and join another team.
“But when it happened I was hoping I would get another opportunity from another team and I did, so I’m looking forward to turning the page and getting an opportunity to play down south,” Mahoney said.
It will be interesting to see how he meets the challenge of living up to the expectations of the Marlins’ officials.
