Miami Marlins defeat San Diego Padres 6-3 at Petco Park - MLB Update
Giancarlo Stanton and Ricky Nolasco help the Miami Marlins keep their five game winning streak intact as the club beat San Diego Padres 6-3 at Petco Park, San Diego, California on May 6, 2012 in third game of their three-match series.
Shortstop Jose Reyes improves his batting average to .234 as he strikes two hits in five at-bats and completes one run.
From the last week, things have started to roll for the Marlins. Their sluggers from down the line-up are unleashing fireworks, as the team has missed largely for most part of the season.
Second baseman Omar Infante has spearheaded the Marlins’ offence in their recovery. Currently leading the line-up in terms of slugging percentage by far, he boasts it at .651.
Nolasco lives up to his reputation and records his fourth save of the season. In seven innings, he gives up two runs and strikes-out three.
He expresses optimism ahead after slumping earlier and hopes to see his side continue putting up the consistent shows.
"It's been tough. We had a tough few games but we are turning it around right now," Nolasco said. "There are big wins for the team, so hopefully we can keep it going."
As Heath Bell has been removed from his role as a closer for an indefinite time, Edward Mujica did the job in his absence. Unlike Bell, Mujica rightly protected the lead and registered a save for his team.
Marlins' manager Ozzie Guillen finally has a reason to feel satisfied of the clubs’ performance.
"From where we came from, we are actually catching a lot of breaks," Ozzie Guillen said.
Padres will not have their starter, Joe Wieland lasting long on the mound. After a little more than five innings, he was taken off and replaced with reliever Brad Brach.
Centre fielder, Cameron Maybin was the Pick of the Day for the Padres. He went 3-for-4 and reached home plate once.
Irrespective of an outcome of the game, the Marlins have issues with their bullpen strength. After a $27 million contract was inked with a star pitcher Heath Bell, it was assumed that the problem will not appear again.
As it has not been the case, they will be hoping that Bell gets back to his best at the earliest.
