Miami Marlins face 1-3 loss to Detroit Tigers in second Spring Training game - MLB Update
Jose Reyes makes Major League Spring Training debut for Miami Marlins in which he was unable to connected for a hit and saw his club to a 1-3 defeat against Detroit Tigers at Roger Dean Stadium in Jupiter, Florida during their Grapefruit League game on March,
6.
A player boasting the title of National League Batting Champion, Reyes went 0-for-3. Showing no concern about his performance, he was fairly confident for the season. “Spring training is all about feeling good at the plate and putting a good swing on the
ball," said Reyes.
After scoring a run in the first inning, Marlins could add nothing more till the last inning as Tigers’ fielders and pitchers restricted them from all sides. On the other side, in one inning alone, Tigers went on a two run lead in the second.
Substantiating his spring average to .444, Tigers’ centre-fielder Austin Jackson went 2-for-3.
Unable to provide the homers needed, Marlins’ slugger Giancarlo Stanton took three balls to hit one and similarly Omar Infante went 1-for-2. Emilio Bonifacio was the only player scoring a run for Marlins’ in two at-bats.
Conceding no home-run, Alex Sanabia could not stop two earned runs and ended up giving away three. These runs actually led to defeat in the end. Had the fielders not allowed a run and with one of Miami’s hitters getting few more walks, results will be different.
Coming off scripting a six year deal worth $106 million agreement with the Marlins, Reyes let the side down, managing only a line drive to third in his first Spring outing. Still Tigers’ pitcher Rick Porcello was extremely fascinated by the way he attempted
the hit.
"He hit that ball so hard," Porcello said. "He's obviously a good hitter."
In a statement Reyes seemed as if he had no affiliation with his erstwhile club New York Mets. For him changing teams does not matter much, what matters most is standing on the plate and hammering the ball precisely.
Regardless of his views, one thing is for sure, Mets, who experienced a forgettable last season will take some time before they find someone like him to replace his role.
Tigers’ Porcello pitched extremely well and while not giving any earned run, only the third baseman Danny Worth’s error got him conceding one run.
He's starting to mature as a pitcher," Tigers’ manager Jim Leyland said. "You can see it in his face, his work habits, and confidence on the mound. Body language tells a lot."
Playing the game against Miami Hurricanes in a windy new ballpark was fun for Marlins’ players as they finished with a 7-6 win there, but against the tougher Tigers, they could not find runs coming easier.
