Miami Marlins go past Philadelphia Phillies 2-1 as Carlos Lee singles in ninth - MLB Update
First baseman Carlos Lee singles in the last inning as the Miami Marlins go past the Philadelphia Phillies 2-1 at Marlins Park, Miami on September 28, 2012 in the first match of the three game series.
It was a low scoring game with both the sides struggling to connect big hits. The first run of the game came off in the fourth inning from the Marlins.
Thereafter, the Marlins needed to substantiate their lead in order to shield themselves against the possible late-innings upsurge by the Phillies.
However, they were unsuccessful in this regard as their feeble one run lead remained vulnerable throughout the rest of the game. The danger of possibly blowing their lead became a reality when the Phillies tied the score in the eighth inning, raising the
likelihood that they will pull off a victory.
Thanks to the timely single by Lee, the Marlins reclaimed their lead immediately.
Other than Lee, right fielder Giancarlo Stanton stood out on the plate by hammering a home-run.
Mark Buehrle started for Miami. In eight innings, he gave up just one run and struck-out eight. He made it hard for the Phillies to strike big hits.
Cliff Lee was unlucky as his seven quality innings went in vain and could not produce a victory for the team.
Lee has praised the contribution of Buehrle as he disallowed batters from scoring for the most part of the match.
"It's one of those things where you have to give Buehrle some credit there, he kept us from scoring a run until J-Ro came through with two outs there in the eighth," Cliff Lee said. "That was a big hit by him, but Buehrle got it done. There's a reason why
he's been throwing as long as he has."
Carlos wants to bring solace for the disgruntled Marlins’ fans as he believes players must put up better shows regardless of the team's position at the table.
"We've got to give our fans our best effort," Carlos Lee said. "We know we're out of it, but they deserve the best from us."
Marlins will like to keep the momentum going and win the next two matches of the series.
