Miami Marlins have borne the brunt of Chipper Jones' onslaughts - MLB Update
The Atlanta Braves’ series with the Miami Marlins is currently underway. Third baseman Chipper Jones did not play the first match.
However, given the kind of record he boasts against them in his career, it is hard to imagine any series getting completed without the discussion about him. This is more so in light of the fact that Jones is playing his last season before retirement.
Ever since the Marlins have begun playing as a Major League club, Jones has been their eyesore. They have failed to get rid of, for the greater part of their history, the onslaughts Jones launches against them.
The New York Mets and the Marlins have been the two teams that Jones has found easiest to strike. In terms of almost every category, his record against them is impressive. On a number of occasions Jones has invited the wrath of the fans of these two teams
mainly because of the ruthlessness with which he hammered them.
On the eve of the start of the current series, debates were underway regarding Jones and whether he will be able to replicate the kind of shows that he has put up against the Marlins in the past. Unfortunately he sat out in the first match.
Keeping in view the retirement of Jones after this season, it can be believed that the series will be dominated by gifts and acknowledgments of his services for baseball by the Marlins more than anything else.
Everywhere Jones is landing scores of presents that are being offered to him. An unprecedented amount of honour is being showered by the teams his side is playing against.
Jones is excited as he is set to play against the Marlins. He admits that he has special memories with the teams in the National League East Division.
“I’ve had a lot of last trips into cities this year,” Jones said. “but the ones in the East [Division] are more special because I’ve got such a history with the Mets, the Marlins, the Nationals and the Phillies. I’ve got three more cities, and one last homestand.
So it’s starting to … it’s starting to get to me a little bit.”
Marlins will be paying homage to Jones before the start of the last game of the series.
It will be interesting to see how he poses before the fans that he has caused so much pain to in his career.
