Miami Marlins in hot pursuit of Albert Pujols with 10-year deal offer – MLB News
The Miami Marlins intensified their efforts on Tuesday, December 6, to secure a deal with the St. Louis Cardinals’ Albert Pujols. The free-agent Pujols is reported to get an offer of 10 years from the Marlins, at a time when the Cardinals are reportedly
devoting much attention and time to re-sign the slugger.
However, the 10 year contract offer from the Marlins was one of its kind as the team president David Samson and Pujols agent Dan Lozano engaged in a meeting that lasted for over an hour, underscoring the urgency the two are demonstrating in the deal.
While no final words came on the nature of the meeting, there were assurances previously that the meeting would eventually bear a result. When the Miami Marlins’ president David Samson inquired about the finality of the deal, he stated that he couldn’t comment.
Compared that to what he earlier had said, "We will definitely have stuff for you this afternoon." It is important to highlight that the team president was meeting Albert’s agent for second consecutive day amid the reports that the Cardinals are also looking
into the prospect of re-signing the slugger.
As for the amount of money offered, the reports suggest it is $200 million. This indeed is far bigger a sum than the Cardinals had offered prior to Spring Training which was reportedly $195 million. But that was a nine-year deal which could not be finalised.
The fact that Lozano chose to remain quiet on the occasion is an indication that Albert Pujols and he want to talk to the Cardinals before making a final decision.
The Marlins, on the other hand, are seriously pursuing this deal which substantiates the earlier analysis that the Cardinals will now have to double their efforts to bring Pujols in their fold.
"They're working very hard, and they are showing people they're for real," Guillen said. "This is not for marketing. They're for real. As a manager, you appreciate that."
As to what would be the end result of these tough negotiations, this week will have a final say on Pujols’ fate.
