Miami Marlins interested in making an offer to Albert Pujols – MLB Update
Looking to revamp their entire ballclub before the next season, the Miami Marlins, formerly known as Florida Marlins, are planning to go the extra mile in a bid to make it to the postseason in 2012. The Marlins failed to make an impression this past season
and thus are going all-out to attract big names to the ballclub.
The Marlins will not waste the opportunity of luring big names from the free agent market. After already initiating talks with Jose Reyes and Mark Buehrle, the management is now thinking of making a considerable offer to St. Louis Cardinals’ Albert Pujols.
Making an offer to Pujols will be no easy task. The slugger denied a ten-year 200-million-dollar contract from the Cardinals last year and recently got an offer again from the Cardinals with the same monetary incentive over nine-years. He has not responded
to the offer yet and the Marlins will have to go a step ahead to ensure that Pujols has no choice but to accept.
Pujols was central to his team’s World Series win over Texas Rangers this past season and there are rumours that the Cardinals might offer him a player-c*m-manager role. However, Pujols might not be enticed by a managerial role this early and will be looking
for a contract which pays something close to what New York Yankees’ Alex Rodriguez gets.
One thing, apart from the contract, which might be attractive to Pujols, is the location. Marlins’ president David Samson asserted that the franchise is a great fit for Cuban and Latin American players because the Miami is the gateway to the Americas. A
native of the Dominican Republic, Pujols might consider this fact as well, but it remains to be seen how things unfold in the near future.
Team owner Jeffrey Loria envisions Pujols to play at first base when the Marlins take field at their new stadium on April 4, 2012. Loria has already signalled a spending spree this offseason and it will be no surprise if the franchise manages to attract
Pujols to the ballclub.
If Pujols is to be signed along with Reyes and Buehrle, the Marlins cannot avoid a payroll of over 100-million-dollars.
