Miami Marlins look for Ozzie Guillen’s successor as they interview Lloyd McClendon - MLB Update
Lloyd McClendon joins the list of contenders for managerial role in Miami Marlins as replacement for Ozzie Guillen. Recently, the Marlins ousted Guillen and immediately after the formal declaration, the quest to find his successor began.
At the moment, the Marlins are interviewing candidates that are willing to perform the role.
Detroit Tigers’ manager Jim Leyland believes if the Marlins acquire McClendon, he will be a great addition in their team.
“He’s a polished guy,” Jim Leyland said. “He’s a very hard- working guy. He would be a great fit there. I don’t know their plans. He could certainly be a very creditable manager. There is no question at all about that. I am hoping he gets the opportunity.”
Guillen was removed by the Marlins owing to the continuous failures of the team under him in 2012 regular season. As many believe, it was more due to the controversies than the inspirational managerial skills that Guillen became popular.
Right in the beginning of the season, he invited the wrath of the Cuban community by hinting that he loves Fidel Castro.
By doing so, he made headlines. For a number of days, he went through media trials. Resultantly, his focus shifted away from handling issues with the team. Controlling the damage resulting from his comments became a more important task for him at the time.
He had to apologise publicly and face five-game suspension from the team. The whole episode disturbed him immensely as he could never come out of it from there onward.
He tried his best to pay heed to the task at-hand but he could not do so, because critics continued denouncing him and making Guillen stay dejected.
Apart from Castro incident, Guillen was vulnerable to his temperament during the matches. He was found yelling at his players in the games. Sometimes, even the members of the oppositions had to bear with a belligerent behaviour of Guillen in the field.
It was no wonder that as soon as the season concluded, the Marlins fired Guillen.
Interestingly, hardly anyone was taken aback by it because the speculations were already widespread stating that Guillen will not last more than one year in the team.
Marlins are trying their best currently to choose an ideal candidate for the team. They want to make sure that someone who can create a winning culture in the club manages their players in the upcoming seasons.
McClendon will be hoping that his credentials impress the officials of the Marlins and encourage them to induct him in the team.
