Miami Marlins looking to top 100-million payroll next season – MLB Update

The spending ways of Miami Marlins is helping them gain popularity during the offseason and rest assured they are certain of landing some big names to the ballclub from the free agent market. They have extended initial offers to Jose Reyes, Albert Pujols
and Mark Buehrle, but the offers are still under consideration and it seems as if it will take time before things get finalised.
There are reports that the Marlins are pursuing Ryan Madson to add strength to the bull-pen, but there have been no formidable advancement in this case. If the Marlins are to sign all these players, or even a couple of them, the annual payroll of the team
is expected to top the 100-million-dollar mark. There have been 17 teams in Major League Baseball who have crossed this barrier at least once and the Marlins are definitely not among the list.
Marlins’ President David Samson highlighted the fact that the management had indicated an aggressive approach for the offseason and this is exactly what they are doing. He asserted that there is no harm in extending offers to free agents and only time will
tell how things materialise. Samson is desperate of making to the playoffs next season and believes that the trio of free agents which the team is pursuing is capable of bringing a World Series title to the ballclub.
The Marlins failed to make an impression this past season, finishing at the bottom of National League East division. However, the management has made drastic changes since and the team is now expected to show an improved performance when it takes field on
April 4, 2012.
“The way we’re doing business is different,” Samson said. “We still have to be smart. We still can’t make up for injuries. We’re definitely going to have a higher payroll, but we need the players to perform and we need them to be good. The way we’ve done
business is trying to get by with our revenue streams, and now our revenue streams are higher. We have a larger pool of talent available to us than we’ve ever had.”
With talent in abundance, it will be interesting to see how far the Marlins go.
