Miami Marlins lose 2-3 against Pittsburgh Pirates as Anibal Sanchez concedes home run - MLB
Starter Anibal Sanchez gives up three runs including one home run, as the Miami Marlins are defeated 2-3 by the Pittsburgh Pirates at Marlins Park, Miami on May 14, 2012 in the first game of the two match series.
Sanchez was unhappy with the little run-support he received.
"What can I do? Just continue to pitch good and wait for run support," Sanchez said. "They want to score some runs. I never have complaints about the hitters not giving me run support."
Losing in front of the home crowd was hard for the Marlins, who are already languishing at the bottom of their Division.
Score was tied at the end of first inning before the Pirates went one run ahead in the second.
Though the Marlins did manage to tie again, it was a double by Pirates' third-baseman Pedro Alvarez in the sixth that sealed their fate in the game.
For one more time, the Marlins saw none of their hitters standing up, down in the innings. As more often happens, whenever a team is trailing by a few runs during the penultimate innings, their pinch-hitters lift the charge and endeavour to turn things around.
However, apart from one hit by centre fielder Emilio Bonifacio, most of the hitters deep in the line-up struggled for hits.
Shortstop Jose Reyes has been steady and while not being able to launch huge fireworks from the plate, he has derived occasional hits.
Reyes was touch unlucky in the game. Being stopped at scoring position for few occasion means he may have reached home plate and won for the Marlins. He heaped praise on Pirates’ starter, Brad Lincoln on his ability to throw fiery fastballs.
"We had opportunities and weren't able to get it done," said Jose Reyes. "Their starter pitched a good game. You have to give some credit to that guy. He had a good fastball and breaking ball and was throwing strikes."
It was the 17th loss by the Marlins. Their offence is not being what it is supposed to be. Bringing just seven hits and repeating the same performance in almost every game are not the mark of great teams.
The club has to improve in this area, if a respectable survival in the season is to become reality for them.
