Miami Marlins lose to Houston Astros 2-3 as Ryan Webb losses control in eighth - MLB Update
Relief pitcher Ryan Webb gives up one run in the eighth, costing the Miami Marlins a 2-3 loss against the Houston Astros at Minute Maid Park, Houston, Texas on May 8, 2012 in the second game of three match series.
In a low scoring game, both sides went head-to-head for most part of the match. Starters from either side did their best and kept the hitters at minimum hits.
Anibal Sanchez, who is going through a nearly perfect time in the season, threw seven innings and struck-out eight, something that will have easily given him the winning status, had the Marlins won.
"That's part of the game," he said. "I don't have any concerns about it. He is one of the best second baseman in the major leagues. He's not perfect. He's human. I know he didn't want to make the error, especially in that situation."
Marlins have some serious issues with their bullpen. Earlier Heath Bell, with whom the club signed a $27 million contract during the off-season, was to be scrapped due to constant disappointments he was causing to his side in later part of the innings.
Bell blew their lead a number of times. Despite confidence the manager Ozzie Guillen put in him, his performance went so down that management had to bring up a replacement.
Second baseman, Omar Infante hit a homer and added first run to the Marlins’ score. He went 1-for-4 and contributed one RBI.
Short-stop, Jose Reyes is not being as prolific as he has been in the past. Ever since he has joined the Marlins, he is hitting .226, which is lower than his career batting average.
Third baseman, Hanley Ramirez was hitless, as was Giancarlo Stanton.
The fact none of the runs that Sanchez gave up were earned ones tells of his excellence as a starter. It was an error by Infante that led to the two runs he conceded.
It was another game that saw the Marlins’ offence struggling.
Pockets of improvements in their offence had started to come off in the last week.
The manager will hope that today’s game was just an exception and offence will just build on those improvements.
