Miami Marlins miss out on Albert Pujols, sign Mark Buehrle to four-year, $58 million deal -MLB Update
The Miami Marlins might not have been able to get their hands on top Major League Baseball (MLB) free agent, Albert Pujols, who signed on to a mega contract with the Los Angeles Angels, but they did manage to score another prized player four time All-Star
pitcher, Mark Buehrle.
The deal went down on Thursday morning, December 8, 2011, as Mark Buehrle signed on with Miami Marline for a cool $58 million deal over the next four-years, which gives the MLB franchise more than enough of the pitching depth they had desired over the offseason.
Miami Marlins manager, Ozzie Guillen, was especially happy at the occasion that the player agreed to leave the White Sox and join Miami since he was the former manager with Chicago and knows how Buehrle works.
“This kid is special,” said Guillen. “Very happy to have this kid, one of my favourite players.”
The 32-year-old has spent 12 seasons in the MLB thus far, all with the Chicago White Sox team which has given him a 161-119 record and 2.83 ERA. Having a world championship, Miami Marlins president of baseball operations, Larry Beinfest, was thrilled to
know that he will be playing with them next season.
“He just wins,” said Larry Beinfest. “He’s got a world championship under his best. One of the best fielding pitchers in baseball. Super competitive. He’s not throwing 95 mph, but he knows how to get people out.”
Buehrle is known to be a rugged, durable and consistent player who can perform every night when the team demands it from him along with having a number of huge performances in the past few seasons which make him a must for any team around the major league.
Adding Mark Buehrle is certainly just not a move to improve the teams’ performance but also a well planned out marketing tactic which could keep the seats and businesses in the city of Miami related to the Marlins busier than ever before thought possible.
“With the team we’re putting together, we expect there to be very few empty seats at this ballpark ever,” Marlins president, David Samson said of the team’s new ballpark.
