Miami Marlins not worried by spending freely – MLB Update
Albert Pujols declined a ten-year 200-million-dollar deal from the St. Louis Cardinals last year. The Cardinals offered him a similar nine-year contract this year, but Pujols has kept it on hold as till yet. No other team considered making an offer for the
right-handed slugger, but the Miami Marlins showed courage and extended an initial offer to the free agent player, supposedly a three-figure nine-year contract.
It was asserted that a 225-million-dollar has been extended by the Marlins to Pujols, but multiple sources have confirmed that the first figure of the offer was not “2”. This means that the offer is much lower than what the Cardinals have already offered,
but it was justified for the fact that it is still too early in the offseason.
Landing Pujols will be an uphill task for the Marlins, but with a boost in cash flow, it seems realistic. The Marlins have expressed their desire of qualifying for the playoffs in the next season and thus will attempt to land big names in a bid to make that
possible. Marlins’ President David Samson went a step ahead and stated that the players, with whom the team is currently in talks with, are capable enough of winning the World Series for the Marlins.
“There aren’t poachers after us,” said Marlins president David Samson. “Every year we’ve had to deal with poachers — and I say that with all respect — and sometimes we got poached. But, this year, the poachee is becoming the poacher.”
The Marlins are not renowned for their spending habits, but this time, their annual payroll is expected to touch the 100-million-dollar mark. This spending spree has earned them a lot of popularity as well, proving to be beneficial in sale of gear and ticket
bookings.
The team which was once treated lightly at annual GM meetings is now been given true regard. They are receiving attention more than what they have normally received and their aggressive approach has played a major role in making that possible.
The agents and players alike are showing in interest in the Marlins, but it will be interesting to see if spending can win games for the ballclub.
