Miami Marlins outclass Milwaukee Brewers 7-3 as Jose Reyes shines - MLB Update
Shortstop Jose Reyes leads the Miami Marlins to a 7-3 victory against the Milwaukee Brewers at Marlins Park, Miami on September 3, 2012 in the first match of the four game series.
Brewers were leading from the beginning by two runs. Therefore a couple of more runs will have put them on course for a decent victory.
However, the first run from the Marlins that came off the hit by Reyes threatened their lead. As a result Miami bridged the deficit to one run.
By adding five runs in the following inning, they surpassed the Brewers by four runs and hence made it extremely difficult for them to bounce back from there onward.
At this stage of the match Milwaukee needed high scoring innings but thanks to the quality pitches thrown by Marlins’ relievers their batters struggled to put up any resistance.
Starter Ricky Nolasco completed a terrific spell of seven innings for Miami. While he leaked runs, he did not allow the opposition to blow the lead once it had been established. He struck-out four and yielded nine hits.
What is impressive about Nolasco is the way he has controlled walking too many batters. The fact he did not walk any batter in his last two starts gives one a reason to believe that he has improved considerably in this area.
"Walks are huge. I'd much rather give up a hit than walk somebody," he said. "I'm just trying to challenge them. It keeps your defense on its toes and helps them make better plays."
Meanwhile, Miami’s manager Ozzie Guillen lauds the contribution of the batters in the game, saying they put the team in a position from where pitchers were able to defend the score easily. Furthermore, he has highlighted the importance of making fine plays
in the field by the players and how their effort led to their eventual victory.
"The offense put together a pretty good inning. We did a lot of good things, executed a few plays we put on," Guillen said.
Still there are three matches remaining in the series which means that the Marlins cannot rest assured and be complacent.
Guillen will be making sure that the players keep performing in the same fashion all through the series.
