Miami Marlins outclass San Diego Padres 5-4 as Justin Ruggiano shines on the plate - MLB Update
The centre fielder Justin Ruggiano singles in the tenth and sends shortstop Jose Reyes aboard in turn, as the Miami Marlins beat the San Diego Padres 5-4 at Marlins Park, Miami on July 29, 2012 in the last game of the three match series.
The Marlins made a belligerent fight back in the game. Trailed by two runs, they initiated the progress from the sixth onward. Afterward, there was no looking back for them.
Miami’s relievers disappointed them, however. They allowed the Padres add two runs and tie the score in the eighth.
As the score remained tied until the end of the ninth, an additional inning was to be played. Thanks to a timely single by Ruggiano, the Marlins turned out victorious in the end.
Reyes and Ruggiano did bulk of the contribution offensively for the Marlins. Reyes made two hits in five at-bats.
Similarly, Ruggiano struck two hits while driving in for two runs.
Ruggiano was jubilant after connecting a hit in the tenth.
He is of the view that he has gone through the same type of situations in the Minors. Therefore, he is not unaccustomed to how to make adjustments under such circumstances.
"I've had quite a few in the minors," Ruggiano said. "It feels the same. A walk-off is a walk-off, no matter where you are. It's always a good feeling."
Josh Johnson started for the Marlins. As he was being scouted by the experts on Sunday due to his likely trade, he did not perform the way that will impress them immensely. He walked six and gave up two runs in five innings as he struck-out four.
He is unhappy with himself. However, he takes positives from the fact that he managed to come out safe from the situations where he was prone to leaking runs.
"Just a mess, but I found away to clean up, I guess," Johnson said. "I don't know how, but I made pitches when I needed to."
Even though Miami has won the match, the issues with the bullpen cannot be ignored by the management.
The two runs that the relief pitcher Edward Mujica allowed in the eighth could easily become the cause of their defeat.
Therefore, they will be looking to work on this area before their next series starts.
