Miami Marlins overcome Atlanta Braves 6-3 in tough conditions at Turner Field – MLB news
Miami Marlins braved constant drizzle and overcame Atlanta Braves 6-3 on Wednesday, July 3, 2013 at the Turner Field.
The conditions were tough for both teams as the downpour was consistent. Mike Redmond, the Marlins' manager was certainly not a fan of the conditions in which the game was played, calling them terrible. He said that the expectation was of light drizzle but
the rain was certainly more than that.
“The conditions were terrible,” Redmond said. “They said that maybe it was going to drizzle over the course of the game. I'm not sure that was a little more than a drizzle. You get that a lot here in Atlanta.”
The manager, however, was pleased but the eventual outcome in which his team won the game by three runs. Mike described the positive outcome as a result of a team effort.
“I was happy, obviously, with the team effort,” Redmond said.
Ricky Nolasco was the starting pitcher in the game for the Marlins. It is rumoured that the pitcher will be traded soon but it appears that the possibility did not shake the focus of the 30-year-old pitcher. Ricky threw down seven innings, surrendering just
two runs on six hits to record his fifth win of the season. The two runs included a home-run in the bottom of the fourth by Brian McCann.
Nolsaco, who is a veteran pitcher in his eight Major League season now, felt that he had tough time controlling the ball in the start. He does realise that the conditions were not just tough for him but for everyone else as well. Ricky commended the ground
staff for their excellent work to keep the field in good shape.
“It started getting ugly there after the first few innings,” Nolasco said. “The grounds crew did a great job. At that point, it's just mind over matter. They've got to deal with it. You've got to deal with it. Everybody's got to deal with it.”
The Braves were ahead by two runs at the conclusion of the fourth innings. The Marlins got a head in the fifth when Justin Ruggiano hit a three-run home-run. An RBI double by Adeiny Hechavarria doubled the lead in the sixth innings.
Jeff Mathis got a two-run RBI double in the eight innings to put the game beyond the Braves. The Atlanta ballclub was able to score one more run in the bottom of the ninth but it was not enough. Steve Cishek made his 16th save of the season.
It was a great win for the Marlins as they had to fight it out in tough conditions against a team that rarely loses at home. Atlanta braves currently own a 29-12 winning record at the Turner Field this season. Beating them in their home is most certainly
no mean feat.
