  1. I'm guessing you are trying to record loud sound. An external mic will not resolve this by itself. You need manual audio control. Either way, this camcorder does not have any method to connect an external mic or a method to control the audio level.

    The loud sound (recording a band?) is overdriving the auto audio level circuit and it gets really muddy. There is no way around this - but here is a possibility: If you get an external "field recorder" like one from M-Audio or Marantz or Fostex, when you edit the video, remove that video's audio and replace it with the audio from the field recorder. Some field recorders have built-in mics - if not, you will need mics, too.

    Some Sony camcorders have a "normal" and "Low" menu selection for audio gain control. The least expensive camcorders I know of that have manual audio control are:

    Canon HV20 and HV30

    Sony HDR-HC7, HC9

    The camcorders in the range of the dxg 506v were not made for extraordinary (loud) volumes.
