  1. get a cat

  2. Get a rodent sound generator. Silent sound above our hearing. In the furture, get a "Rat Terrier" and a cat. After you find the mouse holes, stuff them with brillo or wire scouring pads. They won't bite through the metal.

  3. Cats.

  4. You have two options, either baiting or trapping.

If you decide to bait, use a wheat based poison from a hardware store and put it in about five different places where the mouse activity is most evident, usually the kitchen or places where you eat. Place the bait next to walls as mice don't like to be in open spaces. Behind kickboards and in cupboards underneath the sink are ideal spots for the kitchen. You'll be able to tell if mice are eating the poison by lightly blowing on it. Mice will leave the husks of the wheat which will fly everywhere when blown upon. Once you know the bait is being taken then you know the mouse's days are numbered. Modern poisons work by preventing a mouse's blood from clotting and can take up to two weeks to work, so this may not be the option if you are wanting a quick fix.

When trapping the best trap to use is a back-break trap as seen in a hundred Tom and Jerry cartoons. Don't use cheese however as it's not really very effective. The best thing to use is the soft caramel inside of a Mars bar - they love it. Place the trap with the bait nearest to the wall as this is where mice like to travel. Check your trap at least once every twenty-four hours as dead mice can start smelling bad pretty quickly.

As with all rodent control the best way to combat mice is to stop them getting inside in the first place. Make sure your house is well 'proofed'. Make sure there are no gaps around the exterior of your property that will allow a mouse access. Remember, if you can fit your index finger into a hole then a mouse can get through it.

Good housekeeping will also help you combat mice. Don't leave scraps of food on the floors or worktops. If you have loose foodstuffs try to keep them in sealed plastic containers. If the food is not there for them, the mice will not stay.
