Mice in the house?

I have three pet rats in my house. They stay in their cages, unless I take them out myself to play with them. They are set up high on a desk in their cage. I was just sitting here checking my email and a little brown house mouse ran out across the living room. I have thought I was hearing something scratching the walls in my closet in the living room, but had proof tonight of a home invader. I DO NOT WANT TO KILL HIM, I am going to use a live trap and trap and realase them (far away from my house) What I want to know is are the wild mice dangerous to my pet rats. I bought my rats from a pet store, and have had them for about 6 months. I just found the little mouse in the house tonight. So I dont think they have had any contact, and i have not seen any evidence of any mice in my kitchen (so far) My husband and I are going to set traps tomorrow, but if we dont get all the mice out (or they come back) do you think it will cause any harm to my rats??

  1. i dont think the mice will cause any harm to ur rates. from what i know rates will cause more harm to the mice. so the mice will stay well away from the rates as it would with u.

  2. I'd be more worried about what the rats would do to the mice if the ever met face to face.  Other than that, the ratties should be fine.

  3. well if the mouse gets in your rats food i guess it could give them mites and fleas and other lil stuff ya know i would get one of the sticky mice traps and try to trap it tryt to make sure your rats are away from the mice cause it's posible they could get fleas and stuffjust keep an eye on them for lil mites and stuff and you should be fine i wouldn't think there would be any like contagous stuff the mice could give them good luck catching it make sure you take it far away and generally when there is one there is two and three ya know

  4. I find it rather pathetic when people claim mice have lethal diseases and will kill you if they get the chance. If the mouse had an illness, it would be sick itself and would probably be dead already.

I do not think the mouse will harm your rats. Mice are relatively clean, as they constantly groom themselves. But there is a slight chance that it may have something like mites or fleas.

Once you've captured the mouse and freed it, check your rats over for mites and fleas. If they do have some, bath them with a flea/mite removing shampoo, and wash out their hutch with the same remover. This is probably the worst that could happen.

I want to say kudos to you for not killing the mouse. We need more people like you.

    Good luck. =)

  5. i dont think the wild rats will be dangerous to ur pets
