Michael Allen aiming third straight win on the Champions Tour - Golf News
Michael Allen is aiming to record a win in the Insperity Championship at The Woodlands Country Club to become the second player in the history of the Champions Tour to record three back-to-back victories.
Legendary Fred Couples was the first to record three straight wins on the tour in 2010.
“We all go out there and have times where we are not playing as well, and you keep making pars,” Allen said. “That’s one thing that I’ve done very well in the last month, even the tournament in Mississippi where I finished second — I had one bogey the whole
week”.
In the last seven starts, Allen has succeeded in recording five top-10 finishes that simply makes him the hot favourite for a win in the upcoming event.
In 2009, he recorded a win in the Senior PGA Championship and then lost the secret ingredient of the win on the tour.
Therefore, he remained winless in 40 events and then did something that put him back on track and he started winning again.
He is now leading the Charles Schwab Cup standings after collecting 850 points so far in the season.
“I don’t really know what it is,” he said. “Obviously I’ve won the last few weeks, but I guess maybe once you win, you get a little more comfortable doing it. To me, I’ve just been out really having a great time doing what I’ve been working on for quite
some time”.
Last year, the same tournament witnessed him make a stunning start, as he carded a nine-under 63 to take the opening round lead.
However, he lost control over his game and recorded a 79 in the very next round that shattered his confidence badly.
As a result, he had to settle for the 24th place on the leaderboard while Brad Faxon taking the trophy home with a 10-under par tournament score.
This year, it might not be the case. If he makes a good start this time, he may not allow other players to take his place on top of the leaderboard because he has now complete control over his game.
